The State Social Health Insurance schemes are organized by the State Social Health Insurance Agency (SSHIA) in the state where you live, in partnership with NHIA. There is a SSHIA in each of the 36 states of Nigeria.

SSHIAs are expected to create a state equity fund to ensure that those in need, particularly the poor and other vulnerable groups, get health insurance coverage. This fund is equivalent to 25% of federal government contribution to the state.

In addition to this, SSHIAs have other funds and programmes they offer to their residents and these vary across states

What the schemes offer
Depending on the initiative, the SSHIA may cover up to 100% of the costs of your doctors’ consultations, hospital stays, and emergencies

How they work
  • 1.Contact the SSHIA where you live to find out if you qualify.

  • 2.Once you join, you will get a card that you should take to the hospital whenever you need to receive care.
